Children’s Games and Other Resources

  • Grok Empathy Games
GROK is a set of 20 relationship games and exercises designed to help us listen deeply to each other’s values, needs, wishes, hopes and dreams; and to listen to oneself for clarity and self-connection. These games are fun, engaging, and educational; with no ‘winners and losers’. For children ages 11 to adult.
  • Kids GROK Card Games
Kids GROK is designed to increase children’s social and emotional learning using 58 beautifully illustrated feelings & needs/values cards. The instruction booklet describes 22 games and activities, both playful and meaningful; most suitable for children ages 3-10. Teachers, parents, and counselors use Kids GROK to improve communication, increase empathy and honesty, and to understand, accept, and regulate their emotions.
  • Classroom Kids GROK Cards
Classroom Kids GROK Cards are enlarged versions (8.5×11) of the Kids GROK cards. Printed on high quality cardstock, the cards can be used in any children’s learning environment. Classroom Kids GROK includes 58 color illustrations–29 feelings cards and 29 needs/values cards. Both sets of cards are intended for a teacher, parent, or trainer to playfully share with children.
  • Kids GROK Feelings and Needs e-Posters
    (2’x3’; 21.59×27.94cm)
Foster children’s self-awareness, self-regulation, and resilience with these whimsical bear feelings and needs posters that match the Kids GROK cards. Having these posters visible and discussing them with children supports social and emotional learning (SEL). They can more readily learn to identify their feelings and connect to the need or value underneath the emotion. Note: These are e-posters and will need to be printed.

Books

  • Communication FUNdamentals – 2nd Edition by Jean Morrison
This 2nd edition illustrated 78-page book uses the metaphors of Jackal and Giraffe to represent two distinct ways we orient our thinking, speaking, listening, and responding – either in ways that stimulate separation, stress and upset (the Jackal way), or in ways that connect us to the heart of a situation and each other (the Giraffe way).
  • The Dragon Who Lost His Fire : Authors are Neo Rung, 4 years old, and Liv Larsson, Mediator and Certified Trainer in Nonviolent Communication.
The tale of the dragon Tekshek is a beautiful and encouraging story about the art of listening with the heart. This story is the result of combining moments of storytelling and knowledge of the power of listening. A story that might be even more important for the adult reading it to a beloved child.
  • Feelings on Parade : Illustrated by author and long-time NVC trainer Jean Morrison.
Created for children to read alone or adults who are reading to young children, half of the book is designed for guessing the feelings and needs of the bears in various situations while learning empathy through this process.
  • Ginny Be a Good Frog By Vilma Costetti
This colorful, illustrated children’s book, suitable for children ages 3 to 9, is the product of experimental work in NVC being done in several educational institutions in Italy and can contribute to better communication and understanding between children and parents.
  • Giraffe Tales: How Giraffes Got Their Ears and How Giraffes Found Their Hearts by Kathleen Macferran, Illustrations by Kenneth Schrag
Giraffe Tales is a two-book series of beautifully illustrated children’s picture story books that are also set to music and narrated in the digital ePub editions. Giraffes, one of the land animals with the largest hearts, are sometimes referred to as symbols of Nonviolent Communication since our hearts are where we hold the feelings and needs we most cherish. In How the Giraffe’s Got Their Ears, the giraffes find joy when they are able to hear the beautiful feelings and needs in all hearts, in other words, when they are able to empathize with each other. How Giraffe’s Found Their Hearts is a story of the importance of being connected to our own hearts so we can live from our own values and joy.
  • Zak : A children’s book by Bridget Belgrave, most loved by 7-12 year olds and adults.
Zak is an introduction to a whole new way of life, of cultivating awareness and tapping in to the powerful, creative inner self. It’s listening to silence with pleasure, and feeling empathy non-verbally. It encourages children to feel things for themselves and to be aware of their inner potentials, regardless of the assumptions and put-downs of others. It is a wholly healing book.”Margaret Harrison, author of ‘Angels on Roller Skates’.
